How to watch the Chernobyl TV series ?

What is Chernobyl ?

Chernobyl launched on Sky Atlantic earlier this month and after just three episodes has managed to leap over BBC’s Planet Earth II, Band of Brothers, Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones as the most loved show in the history of TV.

The series has already achieved a 9.5 stars out of 10 rating on IMDB, topping the list otherwise dominated by David Attenborough’s wildlife spectacles.

Talking about the success of Chernobyl, Zai Bennett, Sky’s Director of Programmes enthused: ‘This jaw-dropping Sky Original is gripping viewers across the UK and beyond for good reason – the writing and production are second to none, and the story is both fascinating and utterly tragic. ‘This is must-watch TV, and we’re delighted that audiences are enjoying it as much as we are.’

Chernobyl follows Jared Harris as real life Soviet chemist Valery Legasov, climbing an uphill battle to convince the USSR of the long-lasting repercussions from the nuclear blast, warning millions of lives were at risk as deadly chemicals drifted through neighbouring cities.

The synopsis reads: ‘On April 26, 1986, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, Soviet Union suffered a massive explosion that released radioactive material across Belarus, Russia and Ukraine and as far as Scandinavia and western Europe.

HBO’s new five part series Chernobyl is an intense and powerful journey into the events surrounding the horrific real-life disaster at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in 1986. Commanding performances by Stellan Skarsgård, Jared Harris, and Emily Watson bring the terrible events to life, from the human incompetence that led to the initial explosion, to the devastating long-lasting effects of the nuclear fallout that followed.

5 things you need to know before you watch Chernobyl

You wonder where to watch the Chernobyl series but before you do check out if it is worth it. The critically acclaimed five-part HBO miniseries about one of the worst “unnatural” disasters in history.

The human story of the Chernobyl disaster is brought to life by brilliant performances from Stellan Skarsgård (The Avengers), Emily Watson (Kingsman: The Golden Circle) and Jared Harris (The Crown) in a gripping series that follows the responders who made incredible sacrifices to contain the nuclear fallout.

But what actually happened on that devastating day in 1986 and, crucially, in the aftermath?

5 things about Chernobyl

  1. The cause of the accident, which occurred at reactor 4, was a combination of poor design and human error during a safety test. Operators ran the plant at low power without taking the correct precautions. The reactors were highly unstable at low power. A power surge caused a sudden increase in heat, which ruptured tubes containing fuel. Hot fuel particles then reacted with the cooling water, causing a steam explosion that lifted the 1 000 ton cover off the top of the reactor. A second explosion exposed the reactor core to the environment and a fire that burned for 10 days released radiation into the atmosphere.
  1. The disaster took place in the Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union, and affected Belarus, Ukraine and Russia. Today the Exclusion Zone covers an area of approximately 2 600 km2 and has become a tourist attraction. If you happen to be on holiday in Kiev, Ukraine, you can take a day trip there.
  2. The nearest human settlement to the power plant was the newly-built city of Pripyat, which had a population of about 50 000 people. Soviet authorities started evacuating around Chernobyl within 36 hours of the accident. They evacuated 115 000 people following the incident in 1986 and a further 220 000 after that.
  1. At least 31 people died from the initial steam explosion, exposure to radiation, and thermal burns. One was due to cardiac arrest. The long-term health effects of the disaster are much harder to determine, but there is evidence that instances of thyroid cancer increased in the contaminated areas.
  2. After the accident, authorities enclosed reactor 4 in a concrete structure that broke down over time. It’s now encased in an enormous steel “sarcophagus” that should last 100 years.

Chernobyl starts on Wednesday 23 May on M-Net (101) at 22:00 »

Turtles’ hidden talents revealed in new research

Turtles’ hidden talents revealed in new research

TURTLES can see colour, have a memory, and some travel up to 4000km in the sea without stopping for food, new research shows.

They love the colour blue and can solve basic puzzles that reveal a memory span of at least nine months, studies found.

Turtle lovers yesterday “shellebrated” World Turtle Day to mark the ancient marine creature that dates back to the dinosaur age – with a survival rate of one in 1000 living to adulthood.

“We know the ocean is polluted, we know turtles eat plastic, we know about boat strikes,’’ James Cook University’s Associate Professor Ellen Riel said.

“Turtles have been here a long time, and they haven’t changed, but the environment is changing.”

It comes as a new study by Aboriginal rangers shows the green turtle population south of Bowen is up by 150 per cent.

WWF-Australia’s Darren Grover said it was a positive sign.

“These majestic creatures still face many challenges. But this study shows that given the right conditions green turtles can rebound.’’

Lady Elliot Island marine biologist Jacinta Shackleton, renowned on Instagram for her stunning images of undersea life, said she loved turtles because they were a funny, curious animal.

“They are friendly and extremely relaxed around humans,’’ she said.

“Their journey from hatchling to adulthood is amazing.

“Very few hatchlings will reach maturity about one in 1000, which actually increases to one in 10,000 when human interference is added in.”

Ms Shackleton said the odds were against the hatchlings as they tried to avoid predators such as seagulls, monitor lizards and crabs on the beach, and even more predators awaiting their arrival in the waters.

Total War: Three Kingdoms Release Times Revealed

The Total War: Three Kingdoms release date is tomorrow, on the 23rd of May. With the game primed for release after its two-month delay, Creative Assembly has now revealed the exact release times across a variety of global time zones. Of course, the game is already available to pre-load on Steam. However, these times are exactly when the game will be officially available to play.

Global Total War: Three Kingdoms Release Times Have Been Revealed

Five specific Total War: Three Kingdoms release times have now been revealed by Creative Assembly. Of course, they’re all actually the same time around the world. To start with, the game will officially release at 8:00 AM BST (UK time). This means that it will release at 3:00 AM EDT in New York and 3:00 PM CST in Beijing. Finally, the game will launch at 12:00 AM PDT in Los Angeles/Seattle, and also at 5:00 PM AEST in Sydney.

Total War Three Kingdoms Release Times Revealed 2

Of course, this is also the time that the day-one Yellow Turban Rebellion DLC will become available. This DLC is currently free for early adopters. As such, it’s free for anybody who pre-orders the game or who purchases it within one week of release. The Yellow Turban DLC adds three new playable faction leaders, all of whom lead different Yellow Turban rebel factions; He Yi, Huang Shao and Gong Du. These characters feature in campaigns, but are only playable if you have the DLC.

Creative Assembly also recently released structural plans for their upcoming Three Kingdoms DLC. Although no specific details have been released for DLC, the studio has said that they plan to focus on ‘Chapter Packs,’ which will focus more closely on specific events and periods in Romance of the Three Kingdoms. They will introduce new characters, factions, and gameplay mechanics, and introduce different campaigns and starting positions which will vary from the core game.

Over the weekend, developer Creative Assembly granted a super-fan his dying wish: early access to the soon to be released Total War: Three Kingdoms.

A Redditor, by the handle of TheMissingLink5, created a heartfelt post on the Total War subreddit, entitled My brothers last dying wish, to play 3 Kingdoms.

TheMissingLink5’s younger brother, Robbie, was diagnosed with Leukemia late last year and was preparing to have a bone marrow infusion. Sadly, his battle took a turn, and doctors advised that he didn’t have long left.

Robbie, an avid gamer, had a last request. He wanted to play the newest game in his favorite series, Total War: Three Kingdoms, but his doctors weren’t sure he would make it to the game’s release date, May 24. TheMissingLink5 took to social media and contacted influencers in an attempt to have his brother’s plea be heard by the developer, Creative Assembly.

Thankfully, they heard and reacted swiftly.

TheMissingLink5 updated the Reddit post after being contacted by members of Creative Assembly: “u/DogbertCA on here and Grace on Twitter have made one kid extremely happy. When I told him the good news, he cried, and couldn’t believe this was happening,” they wrote.

“When I told him who sent it, he was so shocked. I then immediately got kicked out of the room to go home and download it since the internet at the hospital sucks. I should be back there in an hour and he cant wait to play!”

Robbie loved it, and the response to his story from the community was uplifting. “The response from all of you is amazing. We’ve been reading the comments to him and he lights up talking about it,” TheMissingLink5 wrote in an update.

“Watching the intro video he was amazed [at how] gorgeous it was. He went into detail telling me about the different people we could choose from, etc. It was a student-trains-teacher moment.”

Total War: Three Kingdoms

Tragically, TheMissingLink5 said that Robbie died just after midnight on May 19. “I thank you all so much for everything these past 3 days, and the fact he was able to play his favorite game will always mean so much to me!”

A spokesperson for Creative Assembly said: “It was a small thing to do on our part—sending out a review code via DM—but we sincerely hope it offered some comfort during such a difficult time.”

This is not the first time Creative Assembly has granted a super-fan their final wish. A Total War player named James was immortalized in Rome 2 as a playable general and got to play the game months early and even make suggestions to the dev team before his untimely passing.

The Lonely Island Is Dropping a Big Surprise on Netflix at Midnight, What Is It?

The Lonely Island

Surprise! The Lonely Island have revealed they’ve got a secret new project coming to Netflix, and it arrives at midnight. Beyond that, we’re mostly left to wonder and speculate as to what this might be. Luckily, we’re not going to have to wait all that long to find out. In any event, we’re getting some new content from some of the funniest people working in show business right now on the world’s largest streaming service. That, in itself, should be enough to get people excited. The question now becomes, what should we expect exactly?

First, here’s what we know for sure. The Lonely Island, which is comprised of Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer, made the announcement that they’ve got something dropping at the stroke of midnight on May 23 on Netflix, via their Twitter account. The announcement came with a very short teaser that reveals right next to no information, other than the fact that what we are getting is being billed as a “visual poem.” Anyone who is even vaguely familiar with the group’s work knows that could mean just about anything. So let’s speculate wildly, shall we?

The Lonely Island rose to fame during their Saturday Night Live days with musical numbers that were released as “Digital Shorts” on the show. Some of the most notable examples include I’m On a BoatJack SparrowD*** In a Boxand Lazy Sunday. Billing something as a visual poem could easily, and surely will, include music. Perhaps we’re going to get something similar to these old SNLbits? That wouldn’t be at all surprising and could allow for some fun guest stars.

But what if this turns out to be something a bit more ambitious? The trio has also produced movies in the past, such as the criminally underseen Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. Unfortunately, despite being a hilarious triumph, the movie bombed at the box office. Netflix, on the other hand, doesn’t rely on box office in order to have something be successful. So maybe this is going to more closely resemble another Lonely Island movie? That would seem less likely as it undoubtedly would be far more difficult to hide the fact that these three were making a whole movie with no news making its way out into the world until now. Then again, stranger things have happened and Netflix does like to throw money around at potentially buzzy projects.

It’s also possible this could be a concert movie of some kind. The group is scheduled to kick off their first-ever live tour next month. That said, the first show isn’t scheduled until June 15 at Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tennessee. So it would seem like a slight to fans who paid to go see them if they just release a concert movie on Netflix ahead of the tour.

Fortunately, we won’t have to wait all that long to figure this out. It should be noted that it’s not totally clear in which time zone midnight relates to. If that’s East Coast time, that means those on the West Coast will be able to enjoy whatever this is at 9 p.m. If it’s West Coast time, eager fans on the East Coast will be up late. Keep an eye on those Netflix cues. For now, be sure to check out the brief teaser from The Lonely Island Twitter account below.

Game of Thrones review – epic final episode corrects some major wrongs

Spoiler warning: this article is for people who have watched the Game of Thrones finale. Do not read on unless you have watched season eight, episode six: The Iron Throne.

Game of Thrones finale: who ended up on the Iron Throne? As it happened

And so, at last, after 73 episodes, untold millions of dollars and an estimated 200,000 slayings, it is all over – bar the shouting on the internet. Death came to Game of Thrones and everyone involved in its making threw up their hands and shouted “Yes! Finally! Today!”

We began the finale with Tyrion wandering the ash-strewn ruins of King’s Landing, scene of Daenerys’ handbrake turn into full-blown lunacy last week, lifting fallen bricks and confirming for himself, and viewers still clinging to hope, that the Lannister twins were indeed deceased beneath them. Having the Imp cry “This is an ex-Lannister! If it wasn’t buried under rubble it would be pushing up daisies!” would have been only fractionally less subtle a way to confirm what we all needed confirming before we could get on with the true business of the day; deciding who gets the Iron Throne, who gets to die and who gets a spin-off series.

Daenerys was looking confident about her position, with a jaunty speech to her followers (“Blood of my blood! You have given me the Seven Kingdoms!”) and the speedy arrest of Tyrion for treason. Jon looks pained. Possibly because of the mindless destruction and mass murder carried out by his lover-aunt. Possibly because he’s trying to do a sum involving odd numbers in his head. Dear, sweet, useless Jon. People have berated the writers for many things over the show’s run, but they surely deserve some recognition for managing to sell Kit Harington as a convincing candidate for kingship.

Jon visits Tyrion in prison, where the Last Lannister tries – as Arya does just before – to convince Jon that as a fellow Targaryen with a claim to the throne, the woman atop the dragon might just attempt to do him harm in the near-future. “That’s her decision,” says Dumbo. “She is the queen.” Tyrion adds that she’ll probably go after Sansa and Arya, too, which seems to cause scales to fall from Jon’s eyes, and prompts just about the only bit of action in the finale.

SPOILER

COMING

UP

In this generation’s Buffy/Angel moment, Jon kills Daenerys for the greater good. Drogon makes his feelings about this development clear by melting the Iron Throne with dragon fire and flying off with her corpse. “That’s no good!” shouts Jon after him. “T’throne’s just a symbol. Tha’s got a lot more work to do before tha can usher in an age of representative democracy!” No, he doesn’t. But the actual script doesn’t try much harder. After Jon is arrested offscreen by the Unsullied, the lords and ladies of Westeros convene to decide what must be done. They decide to … choose a ruler from among them. Just like that. Grey Worm, made Dany’s Commander of All War Things in the wake of her dragon nuking King’s Landing, makes no objection. No word on who gets to tell the Dothraki. Bagsy not me.

Samwell wonders whether the people should have a say in who gets to govern them. Oh, but the guffaws can be heard across the Narrow Sea! So that’s that possibility as dead as a White Walker run through with Valyrian steel.

ANOTHER

SPOILER

COMING

UP

Bran. Or Bran the Broken, as he is dubbed. Westeros is very ableist, as you might have suspected after the six seasons it took for anyone to cobble together a wheelchair for him. It’s a callback to the ancient figure of Bran the Builder, who raised The Wall, founded Winterfell and was the first King of the North, but still. Bran. Bloody Bran. He will rule over only six kingdoms, because Sansa declares the North will become independent once more. Which again, everyone seems fine with. Tyrion becomes Bran’s Hand but Grey Worm insists that Jon be punished by returning to the Night’s Watch. Fair does. Might as well look permanently pained somewhere; it makes sense. And he’ll never realise there’s no reason for the Night’s Watch to exist any more.

Arya is taking a gap year to go travelling “west of Westeros”, an unmapped region rumoured to contain the Mountains of Spin-Off Potential. Our last sight of the whole shebang is Jon setting off into the super-north with the Free Folk.

There’s no doubt this season has been a rushed business. It has wasted opportunities, squandered goodwill and failed to do justice to its characters or its actors. But the finale just about delivered. It was true to the series’ overall subject – war, and the pity of war – and, after doing a lot of wrong to several protagonists last week, did right by those left standing. Whether the million signatories to the petition to remake the entire final season, or the majority of the estimated 45 million around the world due to watch the last episode, will agree – who knows. When you play the Game of Thrones, you win or you die. Overall, I think, it won.

Game of Thrones’ finale left us with a lot to talk about.
